Nakkatya
Fair a Crowd-puller VARANASI: Varanasi, the culture capital of north India, boasts of innumerable cultural events. One of the most popular is the Nakkatya fair organised in Chetganj. The fair specifically details the tale of Lakshman cutting off the nose of Ravana's sister Shoorpanakha, apart from portraying the complete story of Ramayana.
The roots of Nakkatya date back to 1888. To fight the atrocities of the British rulers, a mystic, Baba Fatehram, started this mela. Currently it emphasises the need to combat terrorism in the country. "The fair, which was started during the time of British rule, originally intended to overthrow the oppressive rulers with the aid of religion, now signifies our determination to fight terrorism," said Suresh Rai, president, Ram Lila Samiti, Varanasi. A hundred and fifteen years later, the fair still remains a crowd-puller attracting millions to the celebrations, signifying the victory of good over evil. -ANI |
