Moustache Competition Tops Marwar Festival
(October 21, 2002)

JODHPUR: The two-day Marwar festival to promote tourism in Rajasthan drew large crowds of foreigners on Sunday, October 20. The festival, which got off to a colourful start on Saturday, is held annually against the backdrop of forts and palaces in Jodhpur, the main city of Marwar region, about 200 kilometres from State Capital Jaipur.

Hundreds of folk dancers and musicians exhibited their skills to the visitors, including foreign tourists. The festivities reach their climax on full moon day, which fell on Sunday, October 20, this year. Folk artistes danced and sang to the legends, sagas and folklore of the State. There was also a breath-taking display of acrobatics by camels.

The bleak desert landscape provided a perfect setting for the vibrant colours of the costumes of the folk dancers. A turban-tying and moustache competition for men was the highlight of the day. Rajasthani men take immense pride in their moustache. Women also participated in henna competition which involves the art of making intricate designs on palms with henna.

Organised by the State Tourism Department, the festival which continues through day and night, is one of the high points of the year for tourists and the local people alike. It also marks the beginning of winter in the desert region.
