Nation celebrates Easter
Kochi/Panjim/New
Delhi: Christians across the country attended
special prayer ceremonies and Easter Mass on Sunday
to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In
southern parts of the country, devouts came in huge
numbers to attend midnight mass in Kochi, which has
a large Christian population. In Goa, hundreds of
people thronged the famous Church of Our Lady of Immaculate
Conception at Panjim to participate in the midnight
mass. "I am just going to celebrate this Easter whishing
all my well- wishers, family, relatives, friends and
all whom I meet. This is rejoicing the life after
death," said Lydia, a visitor to the church. At the
Sacred Heart Cathedral in New Delhi, devotees lit
candles, sang devotional songs and attended special
prayers to mark the day. For Christians the miraculous
event symbolises the victory of good over evil and
life over death. Easter is celebrated on the first
Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox
or the first Sunday after Good Friday - another important
date on the Christian calendar, when Christ was crucified.
It also concludes the Lent season, which covers a
forty-six day period. The Lent season is a period
of penitence in preparation for Easter, considered
the highest festival of the church year.
