Processions mark beginning of Holi in Vrindavan

Vrindavan (Uttar Pradesh): A vibrant and colourful procession accompanied by songs and dance marked the beginning of a 16-day long festival of Holi in Vrindavan as thousands gathered to enjoy the traditional celebration. The exuberant festival, which is associated with the eternal love of Hindu lord Krishna and his consort Radha, brought hundreds of people on to the street with young girls dressed as the divine pair. Locals say the tradition of the procession, which is more than a century old, marks the start of the festival. "This ritual has been performed for over 150 years and this procession is taken out every year. After the procession, the Holi celebration starts," said Deshbandhu Kagzi, a local. Colour smeared people flirting with dry colour powders took out a procession walking through lanes and bylanes painting the holy town in different hues. Holi, a festival that holds a mythological importance - that of the triumph of good over evil would be celebrated in the country on March 15. The festival, which brings together people of all age, is a time when people splash colours on each other.
