The Film:
Yeh Kya Ho
Raha Hai is
an interesting
film. The story
unfolds on a college
campus. Some boys
and girls are
facing the problems
of adolescence
and growth. There
is also an unusual
professor of sexology.
It is commonly
understood that
love should end
in marriage. However,
there is no rebel
although not all
people believe
in this philosophy.
Everything is
very conventional
and traditional.
Even
the emotional
bonds that develop
between a grown-up
boy and his English
teacher Stella
are not allowed
to go beyond platonic
love. When, at
a meeting, the
youth in an impulse
tries to kiss
her, she is so
flustered and
shocked that she
asks him to get
out of sight.
Since both are
Christian and
supposed to have
been brought up
in a westernised
and modern value
system, the woman's
behaviour is not
very convincing.
Stella
has had a tragedy
in her life: her
fiance died in
war. In the circumstances
she wanted someone
to fill her emotional
void and meet
her physical demands
too. On the face
of it there was
nothing wrong
in having a relationship
with the youth
who was growing
intensely emotional
about her. But
the director/writer
may have been
prevented from
showing it as
socially acceptable
because it may
be seen by the
young generation
in a wrong light.
On the whole,
the film is quite
entertaining.
There is fun,
fight and intimate
scenes, and comic
characters like
the sexology teacher-father
of one of the
boys, Javed Akhtar's
lyrics and some
great tunes from
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
