Director:
Indra Kumar
Cast:
Anil Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa
Shetty
The
Film: Indra Kumar's Rishtey is not
just about marital relationship, but also
about the persons who are part of the
couple's world. It's about Suraj, Komal
and their only son Karan. The two are
in love, they marry, are separated. Then
they fight over their son, after seven
years.
Karisma plays the strong-minded, assertive
daughter of an arrogant and powerful millionaire,
who walks out of a party where he (her
papa) deliberately humiliates Suraj. For
seven years nobody disturbs them. The
father once again shows his evil intentions,
when he gets a chance at the time of his
visit to her house. What holds him back
for seven years, if he has not reconciled
to their marriage? He conspires to create
suspicion between them through the help
of a girl Komal had seen at a party.
Komal
walks out again, this time from her husband's
home, and with the son. Suraj kidnaps
the boy. Goons are let loose against Suraj.
Next is litigation for the possession
of the son.
Meanwhile,
another woman comes in the life of Suraj,
for which he is not prepared. Shilpa Shetty's
performance is definitely trail-blazing
in the role of a fisher-woman.The portrayal
of a Koli girl seems to come to her naturally,
the language and all. And her screen presence
seems to outshine Karisma's. But just
for glamour's sake. Karisma plays a woman
of substance, but a victim of own suspicious
nature. She is over-possessive about Suraj
to the extent that she does not trust
him.
As
usual there are shades of many themes
of the past Bollywood movies.
Shilpa
Shetty, Again, Caught Between the Two,
in Karz
Powerful Scenes
of Intrigues and Violence of a 'Dark'
Family
Shilpa
Shetty is repeated in Karz., but
the role is quite different. She is caught
between two men (that is, heroes), Sunny
Deol and Sunil Shetty. Anees Bazmee's
story has many twists and turns. The film
has a Suraj too played by Sunny Deol.
Savitri Devi's family has a dark secret
concerning a powerful politician (Ashutosh
Rana) and her two children, the other
being Raja (Sunil Shetty)
Both happen to fall in love with Sapna
(Shilpa Shetty). Their love story and
Savitri's past unfold simultaneously and
intertwine to create a powerful drama
of intrigue and a woman's trauma from
rape. The culprit had changed his name
and identity to escape the law and the
sin he had committed. The film gathers
more meaning as it develops.
Outstanding
performances come from Kiran Kher, Ashutosh
and Sunny Deol. Sunil Shetty displays
a sense of humour and has done well. The
problem is their courting the girl, which
is an adolescent affair, seemingly at
least. But the two actors look too elderly
to fit their roles.
