Sush, Manisha team up for comic thriller

Two of the film industry's most beautiful women have come together for a quirky comic-thriller, 'Paisa Vasool', due for release this December. Manisha Koirala and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen will enthrall audiences in what they say has been their most different role till date. In the film, set in commercial capital Mumbai, Sen and Koirala play two diametrically opposite friends, brought together by poverty and broken dreams. Pennyless, alone and with a rowdy mafia gang on their trail, the two chance upon a heist. But what was to be a small-time blackmail prank to earn a quick buck boils into the city's biggest gangster story ever, involving almost anybody and everbody who chances to be in the frame.

Sen, as the street-smart actress, who is too tall to be paired with any Indian hero, is the main comic element in the film. She was thrilled about her performance. "Paisa Vasool is probably my career's funniest film so far. It's a genre that goes into comedy, it's a thriller, it's a drama ... it's I think except action ... it's pretty much everything," Sen said at the film's music release function held recently in Mumbai. Written and directed by Srinivas, the film's music has been scored by newcomers Bapi-Tutul and its lyrics have been penned by Sandeep Nath. Inspired by Mel Smith's 'High Heels Low Lives', this comedy-cum-thriller sees Sushmita playing the role of a struggling actress. Manisha plays the runaway bride. The film is likely to be released at the end of the year. Though the script, a clear take-off from the Hollywood blockbuster ... is anything but different, analysts say the film, a breather for the recently suspense-burdened Indian film scene, could just click. Moreover, the mass appeal of the powerhouse actresses is expected to at least recover its cost in the first few weeks alone.

Koirala, who officially turned producer with the venture, was nervous but excited. "I am extremely nervous and anxious and I just hope that people accept it really well and that's all I am praying for right now," she said. With 'Paisa Vasool' Koirala joins the latest bandwagon of actresses entering the production arena. Though Raveena Tandon (Stumped) and Aishwarya Rai (Dil Ka Rishta) both bit the dust at the box office as their films sank without a trace, Koirala has played it smart. At 40 million rupees, the film's budget is more than modest, moreover the whacky humour and some very good publicity has already got the film rave reviews. But for all the initial hype, whether it will be a "money's worth" for the audiences remains to be seen.
