Mujhse
Dosti Karoge:
Well Done, But Old Hat
Yash
Chopra, maker of the
romantic hit, Mohabbatein
(Love Affairs),
presents his latest,
Mujhse Dosti Karoge
(Will you be a friend?).
The film tries to rationalise
feelings of love and
friendship and make
one a substitute for
the other.
The
film reminds of his
earlier films like
Lamhe (Moments)
and Kabhie Khushi
Kabhie Gham (Joys
and Sorrows). Starring
Hrithik Roshan (Kaho
Na Pyar Hai, Mission
Kashmir), Rani
Mukherjee and Kareena
Kapoor, the film relies
on performances: each
one has done well
in the assigned roles.
Love triangle is old hat
in Bollywood. All the
three are childhood friends
and part of a big joint
family which exists only
in Bollywood story-writers'
minds.
First instance of a film
on e-mail love, Hrithik
(Raj) in London sends
messages to Tina (Kareena),
the girl he loves. But
she leaves the replies
to friend Pooja (Rani)
who is a computer addict.
Poor Raj never realises
the return e-mails are
the outpourings of Pooja's
heart, not Tina's.

A
shot from the sets
|
Raj comes back from London
and goes straight to Tina
with whom he feels emotionally
bonded, thanks to Pooja,
who foolishly expects
him to reciprocate.
Emotional
compromises and reconciliations
form the essence of the
film's story. Though there
is little that Yash can
claim as original, it
does offer a few tips
to the love-sick crowd:
Don't feel let down if
you lose your beloved;
if you can't be a lover
and husband, try to bargain
for life-long friendship.
