Dil Hai Tumhaara - A Poor Follower of Kya Kehna

Producers: Kumar S Taurani & Ramesh S Taurani
          Direction: Kundan Shah
Starring: Rekha, Preity Zinta, Mahima Chaudhary, Arjun Rampal, Jimmy           Shergil, Alok Nath, Govind Namdeo

The Film: Kundan Shah's Dil Hai Tumhaara is a follow-up of a very unusual but successful film, Kya Kehna. A Tips Films production, , it is a story that repeats Preity Zinta. Though Mahima Chaudhary is there as her elder sister - both daughters of Saritaji (Rekha) - there is no lead pair as such. Arjun Rampal is, of course, the hero being loved by both sisters.

Through contrived situations elder sister Nimmi is emotionally linked to Dev (Arjun), son of industrialist Khanna (Alok Nath) who is trained in business management from Harvard. Labour trouble at Khanna Industries brings Dev and Shalu (Preity) together. The girl has wangled a job there and is working when Dev reaches there posing as a driver seeking employment.

Arjun's comic performance is quite smooth; it does amuse as he tries to be an obedient driver saying 'yes madam' to little boss Shalu. They come closer in the natural course. Their relationship looks quite convincing, but gets more and more complicated as the narration proceeds towards the end.

The second half is full of strong drama. Powerful dialogue lends strength to the scenes. As new facts about the family of Rekha are revealed, emotional conflicts between Saritaji and her two daughters heightens. The pace of the film gets faster, through which Shalu emerges as the crucial character who finally becomes instrumental in bringing the story to its logical end.

Kundan Shah, who is also responsible for the screenplay, alongwith Rajkumar Santoshi, has kept in mind what the audience would prefer. The character of Shalu gathers enough audience sympathy towards the end and everyone wants her to get the happiness she deserves.

The film could have had a different ending. But that would have been unjust to Shalu for no fault of hers. She emerges as a strong girl who could face the society and the world. It is not dissimilar to the character Preity did in Kya Kehna.
