The
National Film Awards announced this
year (49th) declare Tabu (Chandni
Bar) and Shobana (Mitr: My
Friend) the best actresses and
Murali the best actor (Malayalam film
Neythukaran).

best film award for his latest venture,
Dweepa, and Lagaan,
which missed the Oscar, bagged seven
national awards. The film has already
been shown in January as part of the
Panorama section. These Panorama films
were to be show-cased at the 32nd
International Film Festival of India
at Bangalore last October. The festival
was cancelled on account of drought
conditions. Chandni Bar, a
thought-provoking film on the life
of girls working in downtown bars,
got three more awards - best film
on social issues and best supporting
actors. The best director's award
went to B Lenin for his Tamil film
Ooruku Nooruper. Mitr: My
Friend also won two other awards
- best English film and best editing.
Cinemaya
Festival
The
fourth Cinemaya Festival of Asian
Cinema that began in Delhi last week
includes a full-fledged Japanese retrospective
of the legendary film-maker Kurosawa.
The package consists of his 1965 work
Red Beard, Rashoman, Madadayo,
the Quiet Duel and Sanjuro.The
other films are contributed by Thailand,
Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Pakistan.
Manisha
Furious
Bollywood's
Nepalese heroine Manisha Koirala is
furious with director Shashilal Nair,
who has used a duplicate for some
of the scenes in his latest film,
Ek Chhoti Si Love Story The
film is about a 15-year old boy's
obsession with and fascination for
a grown-up girl. Manisha calls the
scenes vulgar and says she can't accept
them. "He didn't show me the scenes
despiite promise and now refuses to
remove them", she says. She has filed
a complaint with the Cine and TV Artistes
Association (CINTAA). Nair does not
seem to care, but is slapped with
a notice from Anil Nagrath, CINTAA
member and director-general of the
Association of Motion Pictures and
TV Programme Producers.

IFFI
The
33rd International Film Festival of
India will be held in New Delhi at
the Siri Fort Complex from October
1. The details are not available.

screened in its Panorama section.
Twenty feature films in 10 languages
and 11 non-features in five languages
will be shown. The show includes films
like Chandni Bar, Dil Chahata Hai,
Baaja, Swaraaj, Nishad, Dweepa, Atithi,
Kannathil Muthamittal, Jameela, Konikar
Ramdhenu and Mitr: My Friend. The
opening film for the non-feature section
is likely to be Diary of a Housewife
(Malayalam) by Vinod Sukumaran.

Gurinder Chadha of Bend
It Like Beckham is working
on her next film, an English
language musical to be shot
in India, UK and the US.
During her promotional stop-over
in Mumbai she talked to
a number of Bollywood stars
like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir
Khan, Amitabh Bachchan,
Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit
and Aishwarya Rai. Her producer
Deepak Nayar gave the news
that Beckham will
be released in the US most
likely with an opening at
the Toronto film festival.
