Qantas
mulls outsourcing 3000 jobs to Asia
Sydney:
Australia-based domestic and international airline
"Qantas" is planning to offshore nearly 3000 jobs
to Asia in order to bring about a change in the age-old
work practices prevalent there. According to an AAP
report, a number of Asian BPOs involved in overseas
maintenance, repair and overhaul, are offering record
low prices to bag the deal. According to the report,
the airline is expected to make a decision early next
year on whether to outsource the maintenance work,
and the decision would affect operations in Sydney,
Melbourne, Brisbane and Avalon, near Geelong in Victoria.
About 1000 members of the airline's three major maintenance
unions were told jobs would go offshore unless it
received concessions from its workforce, and that
the airline's performance was hindered by a lack of
flexibility and old- fashioned work practices.
