Jet
Airways, Air Sahara hike fares by 10 percent
Mumbai:
In a move to stem the burgeoning bills of Aviation
Turbine Fuel (ATF), Jet Airways and Air Sahara announced
10 percent across-the-board hike in their domestic
fares in all classes of travel. Jet Airways spokesperson
said here on Thursday that the company would increase
fares on domestic routes by 10 percent from October
14. Jet Airways operates daily over 275 flights across
the country. It also operates daily international
flights to London (Heathrow). "The fare hike has been
necessitated due to unprecedented hike in fuel prices,"
he said. Meanwhile, the public sector Indian Airlines'
officials have also indicated that they too might
follow suit soon. However, the decision has not yet
been taken in this regard, the sources said.
Earlier,
talking to reporters Civil Aviation Minister Praful
Patel had said that the government was ready to allow
all airlines to hike fare due to recent spurt in fuel
prices. "We may consider permitting other airlines
to hedge in future. The fuel prices are continuously
rising", said Patel. The rise in fuel prices which
have doubled since 2003 have severely affected the
growth in passenger and cargo traffic. According to
figures released by the International Air Transport
Association (IATA) the overall growth rate in the
passenger sector has slowed down to 8.3 percent in
the first eight months of the current year. "Due to
the rising crude prices, several global carriers have
imposed fuel surcharges to offset the rise in fuel
bill which adversely affected the traffic," Giovanni
Bisignani, IATA Director General and CEO had said
in a statement.
