Plan
to expand air services during PM's visit to Mauritius

New
Delhi: India and Mauritius will ink a deal to
expand air services between the two countries during
the visit of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh from
March 30. Currently Air Mauritius operates three weekly
flights to Mumbai, two to Delhi and one to Chennai
in a joint operation with Air India. A Mauritius foreign
office official said, Port Luis is expecting that
increased air connectivity would facilitate a higher
tourist inflow into their country, which is currently
pegged at 25,000. Besides the agreement on civil aviation,
both the countries will sign three other agreements
during the Prime Minister's visit, which include a
pact for mutual legal assistance. Mauritius, however,
is peeved at India cold-shouldering its candidature
for the WTO Director General's post. Despite its close
political links and common kinship and its open support
to India at all international fora, New Delhi has
not given any commitment so far to the candidature
of its Foreign Minister Jaya Krishna Cuttaree for
the top WTO post. "We have always vociferously supported
India, by name," lamented the official. Dr. Manmohan
Singh during his visit, will inaugurate the Cybertower,
the state-of-the-art IT Park being developed with
India's assistance at Ebene. The project is being
financed by the line of credit of US $ 100 million.
Several Indian IT majors have already set up shops
at the Cybertower, including Infosys, Satyam. Infosys
is also offering training facilities to IT personnel
from Mauritius. The IT major had 100 trainees from
the island nation, out of which 44 were absorbed in
the company itself. Mauritius, which is facing an
economic problem, now wants to expeditiously conclude
the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership
Agreement with India. It is facing another major crisis
with the complete abolition of export quotas in the
global textiles industry leaving thousands out of
job.

Oman
Air to introduce direct flights from Delhi and Hyderabad

Dubai:
Oman Airlines is planning to spread its network
in India by introducing new services to Delhi and
Hyderabad and enhancing its capacity on Mumbai and
Kochi routes. The announcement was made by the CEO
of Oman Airlines, Abdurrahman bin Harith al Busaidy
and the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Said bin
Hamdoon al Harthy, during the 4th annual sales and
marketing conference held at Cairo. Busaidy, reviewing
the last year performance of the carrier, said 2004
began with a lot of optimism that the airline industry
will finally return to profitability following the
losses the industry suffered in the previous three
years. "Despite the suspension of the Mombasa and
Colombo routes, the airline carried about 50,000 more
passengers in 2004 than the preceeding year, achieved
an annual seat factor of 70 per cent (versus 66 per
cent in 2003), and achieved revenue growth of 8 per
cent over 2003,"The Omani Observer quoted Busaidy
saying. Oman Air, however, will have to face the challenge
of the new low cost fares introduced by carriers like
Air India Express. Oman Air currently operates direct
international flights from Muscat to major Gulf destinations
like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha and Kuwait. In
the subcontinent, the airline flies to four destinations
in India -- Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
