| 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' IRCTC tea cups on Shatabdi train |
March 30, 2019
NEW DELHI: This time it is the Indian Railways' IRCTC at the receiving end
for allegedly having joined a campaign to favour Prime Minister Narendra Modi
in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The Government and its agencies
are not allowed to be used for electioneering as per the Election Commission
rules.
A passenger tweeted on Friday that on Train No. 12040, Kathgodam Shatabdi,
the IRCTC was supplying tea in paper cups with Modi's campaign slogan 'Main
Bhi Chowkidar' printed on them.
Earlier it was found Air India was issuing boarding passes with Modi's photo.
It has since withdrawn such passes as it is a violation of the election code
of conduct. Similarly, the Trinamool complained to the Election Commission about
railway tickets bearing Modi's photo.
The IRCTC responded by saying, "News reports that tea has been served in cups
labelled as "Main Bhi Chowkidar" have been investigated. This was without any
prior approval of IRCTC. The cups have been withdrawn with immediate effect.
It may be noted that only a few of these cups were in circulation. An explanation
has been called from Supervisor/Pantry Incharges. Rs 1 lakh fine has been imposed
on the service provider. Show cause notice has also been served for this misconduct."
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways stated, "It happened today but immediately
glasses were withdrawn. Penal action is being taken against the contractor.
Action is also being taken against the supervisor."
