Farooq Abdullah launches electric rickshaw

New Delhi: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Thursday launched the 'Ummeed ki Electric Rickshaw', a scheme to empower the economically backward women in India. Dr. Abdullah presented the first electric rickshaw to Kohinoor, a 33-year old single mother with 2 young sons and a mother to support. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Abdullah said, "I am delighted to present Ummeed's first rickshaw to Kohinoor. The rickshaws look very nice. They are easy to drive and cause no pollution. I am happy to support this unique initiative." He further said that in a time when cost of petrol and diesel were almost touching the sky the electric rickshaw was a good alternative. Dr. Abdullah also announced to the gathering that his Ministry would be glad to extend any cooperation to make solar water heaters a household commodity among the people. This initiative is being partnered by Ummeed and Centre for Equity and Inclusion (CEQUIN) which is working with socially and economically marginalised women for their empowerment. The programme is intended to enable women to drive smart, environment friendly rickshaws and earn a living with dignity and respect. Ummeed has promised to provide and maintain the electric rickshaws and train the women to use the vehicles.
