April 28, 2012 | Bogibeel rail-cum-road over Brahmaputra to bridge Arunachal | Guwahati: The 4.940 km long Bogibeel rail-cum-road project over the Brahmaputra will enhance the connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Expected to be completed by the end of 2015 at an estimated cost of around Rs 3230 crore, the country’s longest rail-cum-road bridge will be of vital strategic importance as it will
help in supplying rations and other essential commodities to the security forces
deployed in Arunachal Pradesh. With better connectivity, transit time between
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be reduced, giving much-needed fillip to regional
tourism, trade and commerce. “ It is strategically important bridge. It will provide
facilities in both the upper and lower Assam . Goods can be moved quickly so it
is going to be beneficial economically as well as strategically,” Ajit Pandit,
Chief Engineer of the project said. Every year new trains are being launched and
concrete roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna to improve connectivity
within the region and with rest of the country. “We are planning to connect all
the capital cities of Northeast .It is a small part of the entire project by which
connectivity of the northeast states will improve,” Pandit elaborated. The double
line broad gauge track rail link will connect the two existing rail networks on
northern bank and southern bank of Brahmaputra River , whereas the three-lane
road link will connect NH 37 at the South Bank and NH 52 at North Bank. The work
on the project and the sub structure is going on in full swing. The bridge will
be supported on 42 pillars of which 32 are already being constructed. |
