Reykjavik: Iceland's budget airline Wow Air has cancelled all flights and shut
shop on Thursday due to insurmountable operational losses.
The airline asked the passengers who had already booked tickets on its flights
to seek availability on other airlines. Compensation was non- committal.
Over a 27000 passengers have been affected, getting stranded or unable to travel
as planned. The scene at several airports were chaotic as a large number of
passengers going between Europe and North America usually book on Wow budget
airline.
Passengers did not have prior information or warning and all flights were cancelled
by Wednesday night, without providing them accommodation or refunds. Only in
the next morning the airline started informing by email that the budget carrier
had already shut and no more flights will be available.
However, airlines like EasyJet (ESYJY), Icelandair, Wizz Air, XL Airways and
Norwegian Air were offering reduced or rescue fares to help stranded travellers.
The affected passengers could claim compensation from insurance companies or
if to get money from the airline one has to wait till the liquidation process.
The no-frills airliner was founded in 2011. Wow air was considered the best
and cheapest option for trans-Atlantic travel. Primera Air ceased operations
in October 2018. In February, German airline Germania filed for bankruptcy and
British airline Flybmi stopped flying, according to CNN.
Wow Air was trying refinance to salvage the service but couldn't get any.
