Samjhauta Express resumes run, 170 stuck in Pakistan return

ATTARI: The Samjhauta Express train has resumed services after three days of suspension. Many people who had gone to Pakistan were stranded there when the trains got cancelled in view of the Indo-Pak conflict following the bomb attack in Pulwama that killed 40 jawans moving in a convoy to Srinagar from Jammu for re-deployment last month. India's reprisal on terrorist camps in Balakot led to the hostilities later. Air and rail services were affected susequently.

The Samjhauta Express train left Lahore in Pakistan for the border town of Attari with 170 passengers on Sunday. The arrival of the train at Wagah-Attari was celebrated by people who were eagerly waiting for their friends and relatives stranded in Pakistan where they had gone on visit before the escalation of the Indo-Pak hostility.

On the Indian side, the train left Old Delhi railway station for Attari on the morning of Sunday. According to reports, there were 12 Pakistani nationals on borad who had come to India and got stranded because of the conflict.

Pakistan ended the service on February 28 "till further notice."

The Samjhauta Express departs from Lahore on Mondays and Thursdays. The bi- weekly train comprises of six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach. On the India side, the Samjhauta Express runs on Wednesdays and Sundays.

The train runs from Delhi to Attari on the Indian side. The train departs from the Old Delhi Railway Station at 11.10 pm on Wednesdays and Sundays. On its return journey from Lahore, the train arrives in India on Mondays and Thursdays. Attari is the last station on Indian side.

The Samjhauta Express has six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach. The service was started on July 22, 1976, under the Simla Agreement that ended the 1971 war between the two countries.
