DHAKA: A passenger, who faked hijack of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Boeing 737
Flight BG 147 which was going to Dubai from Dhaka with a scheduled stopover
in Chittagong by Sunday evening, was shot by security forces when the plane
landed in the city.
Security forces stormed the plane as it landed at the Shah Amanat International
Airport in Chittagong at the scheduled time of 6:30 pm. The hijacker carrying
a toy pistol died on way to hospital.
The aircraft was immediately cordoned off when it landed in Chittagong and
officers attempted to talk to the suspect. "We tried to arrest him or get him
to surrender but he refused and then we shot him," a police officer said. The
whole operation just took 10 minutes.
The man named Mahadi, 25, a Bangladeshi, wielded the 'gun' in the cabin and
took two members of the crew hostage, it is said. He tried to storm the cockpit.
He had boarded the flight at Dhaka on a domestic ticket to Chittagong.
The pistol was a toy pistol and he had no bomb attached to his body, police
said. Apparently the drama was due to a mental issue as he had said on board
he had troubles with his wife and he wanted to talk to the Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina.
All 156 passengers and crew on board the Biman Bangladesh flight disembarked
safely.
