UK goes into lockdown mode again as cases of new covid strain surge alarmingly
Boris Johnson announced lockdown on Monday as the covid cases are surging alarmingly due to the new mutant strain. He announced a series of new restrictions on movements, ordering people to stay at home till mid-February. All schools except nurseries and special schools will remain shut. The UK recorded 407 new covid deaths and 58,784 new cases on Monday.

LONDON, Jan 5: The UK has declared a new countrywide lockdown as there has been a frightening escalation of covid cases due to the more contagious mutant strain of coronavirus in the past few days. The people have been told to stay home till mid-February. All schools and colleges are closed.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced lockdown on Monday in a TV address to the nation. He announced a series of new restrictions as the covid cases are surging. This is the third national lockdown.

The Prime Minister said: "It’s both frustrating and alarming to see the speed that the new variant is spreading. It’s clear we need to do more together to bring the new variant under control while vaccines are rolled out. In England we must therefore go into a national lockdown."

Under the new restrictions, Brits can only leave home for essential purposes. Johnson said people will only be allowed out of their homes to buy essential food and medicine supplies, attend medical appointments and exercise. They can go to work if it cannot be done from home.

All primary and secondary schools and colleges have gone online mode, into remote mode, since Tuesday. However, nurseries and special schools will remain open.

The Prime Minister said: "Schools are not unsafe for children, they are very unlikely to be affected by the new variant but they cause the virus to spread between households."

Up to six people can attend a wedding or equivalent ceremony. Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people.

The UK recorded 58,784 covid cases on Monday. It is over 50k every day for a week now. The hospital services are overwhelmed. There were 407 deaths in the past 24 hours. The tally of total cases so far stands at 27,13,563 cases and casualties at 75,431.

The health authorities have issued a warning: “Keep your distance from others, wash your hands and wear a mask. This virus will transmit wherever you let your guard down.”
