Karnataka move to open malls 24x7 hailed
The Retailers Association of India said the Karnataka decision to allow shops to remain open 24x7 for three years is "a win-win all around for consumers, businesses and the Government."

BENGALURU, Jan 4: The Retailers Association of India has welcomed the decision of Karnataka to allow all shops and restaurants to remain open 24x7 for three years.

It said, “The provision of operating 24x7 is a timely step taken by the Government of Karnataka which is a win-win all around for consumers, businesses and the Government. This step will not only help the retail industry recover faster from the loss of business due to the pandemic, but will also provide consumers with the flexibility to shop as per their convenience."

The Karnataka Government had on Saturday issued orders allowing all shops, malls and restaurants to remain open 24x7 for three years with a view to restoring lost jobs and also to boost employment and revive the economy after coronavirus epidemic crippled all human activities and left a trail of heavy casualties.

A labour department notification said that the employer shall appoint additional staff so that every employee will be able to avail one day holiday in a week on rotation basis. The details of every employee shall also be exhibited by the employer at a conspicuous place in the shop or commercial establishment.

It also said no worker will be employed for more than eight hours a day and 48 hours a week. Women employees shall not be allowed to work beyond 8 pm on any day in normal circumstances. The violators will be dealt with under the provisions of the Karnataka Shops and Establishments Act and the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Rules.

Transport arrangements shall be provided to women employees who work in shifts, it said. All employees shall be provided with restroom, washroom, safety lockers and other basic amenities.
