Ujjain hooch tragedy claims 14 lives, 7 police personnel suspended
Illicit liquor used to be sold from an Ujjain municipal corporation area by two of its employees, who have been arrested. City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Rajnish Kashyap is among the seven police personnel suspended. It is reported that most of the 14 people died within an hour of consuming the poisonous alcohol.

BHOPAL, Oct 19: As the death toll in the Ujjain illicit liquor tragedy rose to 14 on Monday, the Madhya Pradesh Government suspended top officials in charge of the region and ordered an inquiry. The deaths occurred in areas coming under the Kharakuwa, Jeevajiganj and Mahakal police stations.

Superintendent of police (SP) Manoj Singh and Additional Superintendent of Police (ACP) Rupesh Dwivedi were shifted out while City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Rajnish Kashyap was suspended. Six other police personnel suspended included a police station in-charge, a sub-inspector and four constables.

It is learnt that two main accused in the supply of hooch are employees of the municipal corporation. Their names have been given as Sikandar and Gabbar. In this connection, an Assistant Commissioner of the municipal corporation was suspended. In association with the kingpin of the racket, Yunus, who was arrested from Indore, they used to sell hooch in a municipal parking area.

According to a report, 147 people have been taken into custody. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Trade and sale of intoxicants being done illegally should be stopped at any rate in the state. There should be efforts to ensure harsh punishment to the guilty. There should be a constant drive against drug addiction and illicit hooch to ensure there is no recurrence of Ujjain-like incidents.”

Thirteen labourers lost their lives after consuming the hooch called ‘Potali’ or ‘ginger liquor’ in the city on Thursday.
