Azad, Kharge lose party posts; CWC revamped in major reshuffle
The Congress top has been recast after 23 party veterans in revolt against the style and functioning of the party wrote to the High Command on August 7 to effect major changes in the leadership structure, calling for grass-root elections and a full-time president. The 23 leaders had included four CWC members - Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik and Jitin Prasada. They had demanded election of CWC members too.

NEW DELHI, Sept 12: The Congress in a major reshuffle on Friday removed senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mallikarjun Kharge as general secretaries. They have been retained in the Central Working Committee (CWC).

In the sweeping changes, party president Sonia Gandhi set up a special committee to assist her in the day-to-day matters and recast the CWC. At the August 24 CWC meeting Sonia had said she wanted to have a special committee to assist her. The new committee comprises of AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, Ambika Soni, KC Venugopal, Mukul Wasnik and Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Surjewala (Karnataka), Jitendra Singh (Assam) and Tariq Anwar (Kerala and Lakshadweep) are the new general secretaries. The new CWC will have 22 members, 26 permanent invitees and nine special invitees. While P Chidambaram was elevated from a permanent invitee status to full-time member of the CWC, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, AK Antony, Ahmed Patel and Ambika Soni will continue as CWC members.

Motilal Vora, Luizinho Falerio, Tamradhwaj Sahu, Asha Kumari, Gaurav Gogoi, Anugrah Narayan Singh, Ram Chandra Khuntia and Arun Yadav will not be there in the CWC.

The reshuffle follows the episode of 23 party veterans writing to the High Command to effect major changes in the leadership style and structure, calling for grass-root elections and a full-time president, on August 7. The 23 leaders had included four CWC members - Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik and Jitin Prasada. They had demanded election of CWC members too.
