Hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship claims three lives in Atlantic waters
Hantavirus outbreak has claimed three lives on a cruise ship, MV Hondius, in the Atlantic ocean.
The World Health Organization has been notified, and an investigative team is expected to board the ship upon arrival at its next port of call.
Meanwhile, the incident has jolted the maritime industry, exposing how even rare pathogens can exploit systemic gaps in health safety at sea.
ATLANTIC OCEAN, May 6 (INS): A luxury cruise ship sailing across the mid-Atlantic
has reported three deaths due to a sudden outbreak of hantavirus.
The vessel, carrying 149 people from 23 countries, and crew, declared a medical
emergency late Tuesday after multiple individuals presented with acute respiratory
distress.
The operator of the MV Hondius ship, Oceanwide Expeditions, said a Dutch husband
and wife, as well as a German national, had died, BBC reported. A UK national
(69) in a serious condition was evacuated to a hospital in South Africa. The
ship is currently anchored near Cape Verde, off Africa's west coast. It had
set sail from Argentina around a month ago.

The first case was identified two days into the voyage, when a passenger developed
fever, muscle pain and shortness of breath.
Within 48 hours, two more passengers succumbed to complications of hantavirus
pulmonary syndrome (HPS).
Shipboard medical teams, assisted by telemedicine links to mainland specialists,
confirmed the likely viral etiology and isolated suspected cases in the vessel’s
infirmary.
Virus transmission
Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with rodent droppings,
urine or saliva. Its presence aboard a modern cruise liner is unusual, prompting
investigators to examine possible contamination in food storage areas or portside
supply chains.
The incubation period is 1–5 weeks, detection during pre-boarding screenings
becoming difficult.
The symptoms are fever, myalgia, cough, progressing rapidly to pulmonary edema
and respiratory failure.
Up to 40% in severe cases is the fatality rate.
The ship’s ventilation systems and sealed storage compartments are now under
scrutiny to determine whether rodent vectors infiltrated during provisioning
at a Caribbean port.
The captain declared a “Code Red” medical alert, restricting passenger movement
and suspending group activities.
Emergency medical supplies, including ventilators and antiviral agents, were
deployed.
Coordination with the nearest coastal authorities is underway to arrange medical
evacuation and quarantine facilities once the vessel docks.
