KATRA, Sept 18: The Vaishno Devi Yatra resumed officially on Wednesday after
being suspended for 22 days following a massive landslide on the trek route
claiming 40 lives on August 26. However, the yatra was halted in the evening
due to inclement weather and resumed on Thursday morning.
The pilgrimage routes are now open, with pilgrims expected to follow designated
paths and adhere to safety guidelines. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board
said the yatra will continue uninterrupted if weather conditions remain favourable.
There were 2,300 pilgrims registered for Wednesday and they had the darshan
on Thursday. While most of them trekked, some opted for choppers.
Traders, hoteliers, ponywallas and transport operators have resumed their business
with enthusiasm, especially as the festival season of Navratri begins on September
22.
The Yatra
The Vaishno Devi yatra officially begins from the base camp in the town of
Katra, in the Reasi district of Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir. The pilgrims
start the 12-km uphill journey from the Darshani Deori gate, which is close
to the Banganga river in Katra.
How to reach Katra
By air: The nearest airport is in Jammu. From there, one can take a taxi or
bus or train to Katra. The distance is 50 km. By train: The Shri Mata Vaishno
Devi Katra railway station connects directly to several major cities in India.
From Jammu the train goes via Udhampur, a total distance of 75 km. By road:
Katra is well-connected by road, with regular buses and taxis available from
Jammu (50 km) and other cities.
Yatra from Katra to shrine
From the Darshani Deori gate (near Katra), pilgrims have a choice of several
paths to the Bhawan (the holy cave), which is at an altitude of 5,200 feet.
The old route (traditional track) has been used for centuries and is
a steeper, more challenging trek. The route passes through Banganga and Charan
Paduka before reaching Adhkuwari, the midway point. From Adhkuwari, the path
goes to Sanjichhat and then down to the Bhawan.
The new paved route (Tarakote Marg) was opened in 2018. It is wider,
less steep and offers rain shelters and other facilities. Ponies are not allowed
on this route, making for a cleaner and quieter trek. This route meets the old
route at Adhkuwari.
Apart from the traditional trekking, there are different modes of transport
like helicopter services operating between Katra and Sanjichhat, from where
it's a short walk or pony ride to the temple.
There is also a ropeway for the Bhairon Ghati section.
Battery-run electric vehicles run on the track from Adhkuwari to the Bhawan.
Ponies, pithoos (coolies) and dandis (palanquins) can be hired along the
traditional trekking route.
Pony charges: Common routes and approximate charges (as per website
sources) for one way for ponies are: Ban Ganga to Bhawan (via Sanjhi Chhat):
Around ?1250 for a single adult. Or, Ban Ganga to Adhkuwari around ?650 and
Adhkuwari to Bhawan around ?650. Always confirm rates from official signboards
at the start of the yatra or along the path, as prices can fluctuate. Keep your
receipts as proof of payment. There are Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board
assistance counters to help.
The CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media do not indicate any serious abnormalities in takeoff or descent, it has been confirmed. The disaster is becoming curiouser and curiouser. The flight path was not curvy. And the aircraft maintained a steady, gliding descent with its nose straight and the wings perfectly level. In India the scene is just the opposite. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.

In between, what made Elon Musk 'predict' during campaign if Kamala Harris wins he would be in jail. In politics, it is said, "the only rule is there are no rules." Difficult times for Americans too.
The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government. OPINION: A nutty 'new' Trump must know checking illegal immigration is his job and not theirs. And 'penalty' tariff is not a solution. However, Trump talking about "major threat" from "illegal aliens" (illegal immigration) is about what he believes, right or wrong, and to that extent he is genuine and honest; it is certainly not a pretension to prop up his political relevance. Bullies are always true to themselves. Look at India's crooked politicians shouting day in, day out to prove they are more patriotic, and to whip up public sentiments for them to ride on!
