HONG KONG, Mar 23: A Hong Kong Airlines flight from Hangzhou in China en route to Hong Kong was diverted to Fuzhou soon after it departed due to a fre in one of the overhead compartments caused by a power bank.

The fire was extinguished by the crew and passengers using water bottles and carton drinks. The airline, however, did not specify the cause of the fire. The mishap occurred on Thursday.

Flight HX115, an Airbus SE A320, with 160 passengers and eight crew on board made an emergency landing safely. The aircraft took off from Hangzhou at 12:20 pm and landed in Fuzhou at 2:01 pm. The passengers were flown to Hong Kong on a replacement aircraft.

“Hong Kong Airlines flight HX115, departing from Hangzhou to Hong Kong today, diverted and landed safely in Fuzhou Changle International Airport due to a fire in the overhead compartment, which was successfully extinguished,” the airline said.

Social media videos showed a charred overhead compartment.

Fires involving mobile chargers and power banks on flights are on the rise of late. Such an incident destroyed an Air Busan plane on the tarmac in South Korea in January. Several airlines have since banned passengers from using power banks on planes.

Precautions in buying and using power banks

A power bank catches fire when it is defective - has short circuits, swelling or is exposed to high temperature and pressure, smells, has a hissing sound or is excessively hot even when it is not in use.

During take-off and landing, there is significant pressure and temperature changes in the cabin.

When a power bank drains quickly or takes too long to charge, that is also time to discard it. Keep power banks in cool or well-ventilated areas to prevent overheating while charging or using.. Don't keep the power bank inside your bag while it is in use. Also keep it away from hot devices like laptop and mobiles. Avoid direct sunlight and humid places like bathrooms.

Unplug it after a full charge and don't charge or discharge to 100%. Overcharging and discharging can lead to short-circuiting and fire.

And always use safe chargers. Buy the device with overcharge protection and thermal cut-off. Lithium-ion batteries may overheat while lithium-polymer batteries are safer. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are still better, experts say.

COMMENT: Dragon, unlike what has been reported in the media, is not a rescue mission. Its schedule of liftoff or return has not been changed to suit the stranded astronauts. The Opposition accused the Prime Minister, who seems to insist he alone will inaugurate everything in the country, of "hurriedly inaugurating" an "incomplete terminal" in March last for publicity on the eve of the general elections. At that time he had also laid the foundation stone for 15 other airport projects across the country. He was also accused of inaugurating an incomplete Ram temple in Ayodhya in January which started leaking in the first downpour last weekend.

It is also puzzling why every few years airport buildings are demolished in Delhi and new plans are made for new constructions and nobody seems to take notice! (Because the airport itself is tucked away in a far corner, not easily accessible to the discerning, with a web of roads going only round and round like a tape around a spool, as if not reaching anywhere!)

COMMENT: A simple question but difficult to understand is why the people should be concerned about whether an NTA director is sacked for paper leakage or a DGP is removed for law and order breakdown.
