NEW DELHI, Sept 8: The first suspected case of mpox virus was reported in India
on Sunday. The young male patient, who had recently travelled to a country where
there is an outbreak of the disease and has shown symptoms, has been put under
isolation in a designated hospital.
In a statement, the Union Health Ministry said the patient is currently stable.
Samples from the patient have been sent for tests. No details have been disclosed.
It said the case is being managed according to the established protocols. Contact
tracing has been launched.
The Ministry stated that the country is fully prepared to deal with such cases.
It claimed that the country's healthcare infra has been on alert ever since
the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a public health emergency after an
outbreak was reported in some African countries like Congo last month.
Lately, Sweden and Pakistan reported mpox cases.

Mpox vaccine can be effective when administered even after infection but before
symptoms appear. Recovery takes about three to four weeks.
