PARIS, July 26: French rails were attacked by arsonists on Friday just hours before the Olympics.

Following the attacks on the high-speed rail network, the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024 was likely to be delayed. However, the event is held outside the Paris stadium on the Seine, in the evening, with 7,500 athletes sailing in the river in a flotilla.

Arsonists targeted installations along high-speed TGV lines connecting Paris with the country’s west, north and east. Repairs will take time until Monday.

Apart from upsetting the travel plans of some three lakhs of spectators for the Paris event, contingents going for events outside of the Capital are also affected. About 25 lakh other passengers are also in for a shock.

The speed rail system has been largely paralysed. Many routes were cancelled or trains diverted. It is estimated that around 25 lakh travellers will not reach their destination on time. The North and the East are the worst affected.

Some events to be held outside Paris are likely to be disrupted as large contingents heading outside are held up. It was utter chaos at stations. The transport system will take more than a couple of days to be restored.

Three lakh spectators were expected to participate in the opening cermenony in a few hours. The sabotage has hit at least 25 lakh travellers.

The parade opening the Olympics on Friday evening would comprise 7,500 participants sailing on the river Seine on a flotilla of 85 boats. For the first time the opening is held outside of stadium.
