WASHINGTON, July 21: Following growing pressure from Democrats since the poor performance in the debate with Republican candidate and former President Trump last month in Atlanta, President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for reelection as President on Sunday.

In a separate statement, Biden endorsed Kamala Harris, the Vice-President, to be the new Democratic nominee.

"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year," Biden said on X. "Democrats - it's time to come together and beat Trump. Let's do this." He is recovering from covid at his beach house in Delaware.

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve you as President," Biden said in the post. "While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," he added.

Harris said in a statement. "I am honored to have the president's endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.... I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party - and unite our nation - to defeat Donald Trump."

"With this selfless and patriotic act, President Biden is doing what he has done throughout his life of service: putting the American people and our country above everything else," she said.

The 59-year-old Democrat, Kamala Harris, was California's first Black attorney general and the first woman of South Asian heritage elected to the US Senate, and is the first woman, Black and South Asian Vice-President in US history.

Trump said he thinks Harris will be easier to defeat in the November election than Biden.

Former President Barack Obama said in a statement Biden had "every right" to run for reelection and praised his record and called him a "patriot of the highest order."

Former President Bill Clinton and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised Biden's decision and supported Kamala Harris to be the nominee. The Clintons said in a joint statement that they were "honored" to join him in endorsing Harris "and will do whatever we can to support her."

Amidst a surge of support for Harris among the Democrats soon after Biden's announcement, there are some who have raised doubts on the capabilities of Harris to win the race for the party. They include an inconsequential Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker.

Possible other candidates for the Democratic nomination are Josh Shapiro (Governor, Pennsylvania), Ms Gretchen Whitmer (Governor, Michigan) and Gavin Newsom (Governor, California)
