GURUGRAM (Delhi-NCR), Mar 6: The manager of the restaurant in Gurugram where five customers fell ill and were hospitalised in a serious condition after consuming a mouth freshener contaminated with dry ice has been arrested. The diners had vomited blood after taking the mouth freshener served at Laforestta restaurant in Gurugram Sector 90 on Sunday evening. They were a group of three couples celebrating a birthday, five of who took the freshener.

Apart from restaurant manager Gagan Sharma, a waitress has also been booked. The owner of the restaurant is at large. The manager has defended himself saying that dry ice got mixed with mouth freshener by the negligence of the staff.

The complainant, Ankit Kumar, stated that accompanied by his wife Neha Sabarwal, Manik Goinka and his wife Preetika, and Deepak Arora with his wife Himani, visited the restaurant on Sunday evening. Following their meals, the restaurant staff offered them mouth fresheners. After taking the mouth fresheners they felt a burning sensation and started vomiting blood.

Ankit filed the FIR at 9:30 pm on Sunday, accusing the restaurant of negligence. He had taken with him a sample of the mouth freshener to the hospital which on examination was found to be dry ice.

What is dry ice: Dry ice is simply the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2), solidifying at a temperature of minus 78.5 deg C (-109.3 deg F). It is called so only because it has the appearance of ice and it does not melt. Unlike ordinary ice, it does not melt into a liquid but changes directly into CO2 gas. This skipping of state is called in science as sublimation. Even in the temperature of the freezer sublimation can take place, so avoid keeping it in the fridge. The converting CO2 will be harmful. It stays solid for 24 hours when stored in a styrofoam cooler. Dry ice is available in the market in the form of flakes and pellets.
