Exceptionally ambitious, Saharasri built up one of India's largest conglomerates from scratch, and wielded unchallengeable financial power during good times.

NEW DELHI, Nov 14: Founder and chairman of Sahara India Pariwar Subrata Roy, fondly called by welll-wishers as Saharasri passed away on Tuesday evening at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where he was admitted on Sunday when his health deteriorated. He had been ill for quite some time and died of cardiorespiratory arrest. He was 75.

Starting with a capital of Rs 2,000, Subrata Roy's business story began when he launched Sahara India Pariwar in 1978. The company climbed steep heights to become the biggest employer in the private sector in India providing jobs to over ten lakh workers in a span of a decade.

In quick succession it became one of India's largest conglomerates, diversifying into sectors like finance, infrastructure, automobile, retail, media, real estate, aviation and insurance, and a frontrunner in entrepreneurship. The company has more than 9 crore investors.

His enterprise acquired properties like New York's Plaza Hotel and London's iconic Grosvenor House.

Sahara also sponsored the Indian cricket and hockey teams and owned a Formula One racing team.

Of late, 'Saharasri' had been fighting legal battles over what has come to be known as 'Sahara chit fund scam', which led to his incarceration for some time in the recent past. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had accused Sahara of raising funds without proper approvals. The Supreme Court ordered refund of the deposits.

"Sahara India Pariwar is committed to upholding Saharasri's legacy and will continue to honour his vision in driving our organisation," the company said in a statement.

Born in Bihar's Araria on June 10, 1948, his family later moved to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. From there he shifted to Lucknow in the 1990s and that remained as his headquarters.

Subrata Roy is survived by wife Swapna Roy and two sons, Sushanto Roy and Seemanto Roy, who live abroad.
