Two injured in shooting at Gurdwara in California during Sikh procession
One woman witness said she rushed to one of the victims and covered his
bleeding neck with her scarf. Who were the shooters and who were the injured
was not known. However, Khalistani protests were shown in social media
videos.
SACRAMENTO (California), March 27: Two people were critically injured in a
shooting at a Gurdwara in Sacramento county of California in the US on Sunday.
The incident took place at 2:30 pm (local time). The police said the shooting
was targeted and not random that could injure the public.
Eyewitnesses said four to five gun shots were fired and two people aged 20-22 were lying on the ground. One woman witness said she rushed to one of the
victims and covered his bleeding neck with her scarf. Who were the shooters
and who were the injured was not known.
The shootout took place in the midst of a celebration for the Sikh community
who were taking out a procession. They were hosting a Nagar Kirtan parade, 'The
Sacramento Bee' reported.
The sheriff’s office is quoted as saying that Suspect One shot at a friend
of Suspect Two. Then Suspect Two shot at Suspect One and fled the scene. He is
at large.
The police said it was not a hate crime but a shootout between two men. But
they did not clarify who were the injured. According to local media, one of
the suspects fled on foot.
“Two people shot at a Gurdwara in Sacramento County, California. The shooting
is not related to a hate crime, it is a shootout between two men who knew each
other," the Sacramento County Police said in a statement.
They said a fistfight broke out between two men on the temple premises, which
escalated to the shootout. The injured have been hospitalised.
Sacramento city council member Ms Lisa Kaplan tweeted, “Earlier today, I joined
w our #Sikh community in celebration of the 1st Nagar Kirtan at the Bradshaw
#Gurdwara. I left the festivities a little after 12-noon. I am disheartened
to learn that since there has been a shooting & several individuals were wounded.”
Apart from visuals of the Sikh celebration of the day, there were also seen
on social media videos of Khalistan protesters (Sikh separatists) carrying their
flags.
Meanwhile, in its annual report released early this month, the Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI) said hate crimes in the US increased by about 12 per
cent in 2021. ”Nationally, reported hate crime incidents increased 11.6 per
cent from 8,120 in 2020 to 9,065 in 2021,” the FBI said.
