China shuts consular offices in Pakistan over security threat
Coupled with a deepening economic crisis, Pakistan's domestic security
scenario too is alarming. China has advised its citizens in Pakistan to be
cautious. What will happen to CPEC?
ISLAMABAD, Feb 16: China has shut its missions in Pakistan for an unspecified
period due to "technical reason." Beijing has also advised its citizens to be
cautious in view of the deteriorating security situation.
China has invested heavily in various projects in Pakistan, which is now facing
a deepening economic crisis.
"Due to technical issues, the consular section of the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad
will be temporarily closed from February 13, 2023, until further notice," the
Chinese embassy website announced.
Terrorist activities have increased in Pakistan of late, especially the Pak
Taliban has staged several bomb attacks claiming hundreds of lives recently.
The Chinese citizens working on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)
have also been terrorist targets.
Upon a suicide bomb attack on a Chinese convoy in Gwadar in recent times the
embassy had warned, “Recently, the security situation in Pakistan has been severe.
There have been several terrorist attacks in succession, resulting in the casualties
of several Chinese citizens.”
The CPEC is a comprehensive project to connect China to the Arabian Sea via
roads, railways, pipelines and ports in Pakistan. The 3000-km, $62 billion infrastructure
network project is a much shorter alternative to the 12,000 km Straits of Malacca
oil cargo route. The Gwadar port route is just 2,395 km. China had assured Pakistan
that the new Silk route it has financed will boost Pak infrastructure and economy.
Apart from the worsening security situation, Pakistan is also currently facing
an acute economic crisis like Lanka. Chinese relationship has been intertwined
with Pakistan's economy.
Food, gas and oil prices are skyrocketing. As of Th ursday, petrol costs Rs
272 a litre. Inflation is at an all-time high, at 27 %. In a month, Pakistan's
currency has lost more than a quarter of its value against the US dollar. There
will not be enough foreign reserves in a couple of months to pay the import
bills. Negotiations with IMF for funds have not borne fruit so far.
Over 30 Chinese companies working for (CPEC) had recently threatened to stop
work if their dues to the tune of 300 billion Pakistani rupees are not cleared
immediately.
China and Pakistan are strategic allies. The two countries had established
diplomatic relations in 1951.
