DOHA, Nov 26: A massive fire occurred near FIFA World Cup city of Lusail in
Qatar on Saturday afternoon. The blaze engulfed a building near the newly-built
Lusail. There were no immediate reports of any casualties in the blaze at the
under construction building which has been brought under control.
The building is on an island close to the city of Lusail and 3 km from the
main stadium. Lusail is north of Doha. It was close to the Fan Village Qetaifan
Island North, where several overseas supporters are staying for the World Cup.
It consists of 1,800 tents.
Videos and pictures from Qatar on Saturday morning appeared to show plumes
of thick black smoke rising into the sky which could be seen from miles around
Lusail, which is situated just north of Doha, reported Telegraph.
Authorities in Doha said that the fire was brought under control by the Civil
Defense, but did not confirm if it has been put out. They said no injuries were
reported. Lusail Stadium was scheduled to host the day’s final World Cup match,
between Argentina and Mexico, at 10 pm local time (7pm GMT).
Problems like overcrowding and issues of transport and infrastructure have
been plaguing the World Cup since the beginning. The World Cup is costing Qatar
£185 billion.
