NEW DELHI, Nov 9: A strong earthquake in Nepal shook Delhi and other places
in northern India in the wee hours of Wednesday. The quake measuring 6.3 on
the Richter scale lasted around 30 seconds in Delhi. Six people died in a house
collapse in Doti district in Nepal. Several more houses were damaged. Many people
were also injured.
The epicentre of the tremor was in western Nepal, about 100 km east of the
Indian State of Uttarakhand, according to the National Centre for Seismology.
It occurred at a depth of 10 km from ground level.
In Delhi, Lucknow and other places where the tremor shook buildings, frightened
people ran out of their houses looking for safety. Doors and windows rattled
and light fittings swayed creating an eerie sensation in the dead of night a
little after 2 am.
There were no immediate reports of any loss to life or damage to property on
the Indian side.
The readings on the earthquake scale were: Magnitude - 6.3; Latitude - 29.24
N; Longitude - 81.06; Depth - 10 km ; Location - Nepal; Time - 01:57:24 IST.
Earlier, another earthquake of magnitude 4.9 was reported in Nepal at 8:52
pm on Tuesday.
In 2015, 8,000 people were killed in a severe quake of 7.8 power in tremor-
prone Nepal.
