Five children in Barawafat procession in Bahraich electrocuted

LUCKNOW, Oct 10: Six people, including five children were electrocuted and two
others suffered injuries when an iron pole attached to a cart used in a religious
procession touched an overhead high tension live wire in Nanpara of Bahraich
district on Sunday.
The incident took place around 4 am in Masupur village in Nanpara. Several
more were also injured when a stampede followed the mishap. The Barawafat procession
was held by Muslims to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. The day is
also called Barawafat.
The deceased have been identified as Sufian (12), Ilyas (16), Tabrez (16),
Arafat (10), Ashraf Ali (30) - all residents of Bhaggadwa in Nanpara - and Shafiq
(12) from Malhipur in Shravasti district.
The relatives of the victims have told police that they do not want post-mortem
examination of the bodies as they do not blame anyone for the accident.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials concerned to ensure that
the injured get necessary medical treatment.
