Montpellier airport in France closes after aircraft crashes into lake

The West Atlantic Boeing 737 aircraft missed the runway as it touched down and ended up with its nose and the engine in the lake water.

PARIS, Sept 28: A cargo plane crashed into a lake after veering off the runway in France on Tuesday. The Montpellier airport in southern France was closed for two hours following the mishap. There were no serious injuries reported.

The West Atlantic Boeing 737 aircraft missed the runway as it touched down and ended up with its nose and the engine in the lake water. According to photos put out online by France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA), the body of the plane rested on the edge of the lake.

The airport was closed to passenger and cargo flights after the accident. All flights to and from the airport were also cancelled. Twenty-one commercial flights had been scheduled for the day.

There has been a spike in air accidents especially in the West in the past few months following full reopening of air services after the two-year covid pandemic restrictions.

Washington State crash

Two brothers on board were rescued uninjured after a small plane crashed last Sunday evening near Lake Cavanaugh in Washington State. The two were hoisted out of the woods by a rescue helicopter to safety. The plane was on its way to Arlington, travelling from Concrete.

A fiery crash in Nevada race

A pilot was killed when their plane went down in a fiery crash during an annual air race competition in Nevada, US, on September 18. The rest of the events on the final day were cancelled after the incident. The incident took place during the championship round on the final day of the Reno Air Races. The Reno Air Races are held annually in September at Reno Stead Airport in Nevada.

Washington State: 10 killed

One person was killed and rescue crews were searching for nine others after a small plane crashed along the coast of the US State of Washington on Whidbey Island, in Puget Sound, north of Seattle, on September 4, the coast guard said. They are all presumed dead.

Lake Hartwell crash

On September 10, a single-engine plane crashed into a lake near the border of South Carolina and Georgia killing the pilot, the sole occupant. Lake Hartwell is a 56,000-acre lake that spans part of the border between Georgia and South Carolina. The Federal Aviation Administration told news outlets that the Beechcraft B55 Baron crashed into Lake Hartwell near Anderson Regional Airport in Anderson, S.C.

Mid-air collision in California

A mid-air collision took place between two small aircraft in the US state of California in August which resulted in multiple casualties, officials said.

Lake Powell crash

A small plane crashed into Lake Powell on the Colorado River along the Arizona-Utah border on August 13. Two were dead and 15 injured. The plane was carrying French tourists. The aircraft was in 120 feet of water.

Pilot jumps without parachute, dies

A co-pilot of a small plane died on Friday after exiting the aircraft in North Carolina, US, before it made an emergency landing, in August. His body was found in a backyard, about 48 km south of the airport. He jumped without parachute.

Crash in Greek city

All eight crew members of a cargo plane that crashed near the Greek city of Kavala died in the accident in July.

Plane carrying 126 catches fire

A plane carrying 126 people caught fire when its landing gear collapsed on the runway at Miami International Airport, US, in June.

Myanmar lake crash

A Myanmar fighter jet crashed into a lake in the country's northwest on February 16 due to engine failure killing the piolt.
