Pregnant woman run over, killed by loan recovery agents in Hazaribagh

RANCHI, Sept 17: In a profoundly disturbing incident, a pregnant woman was run over by four loan recovery agents in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, on Thursday. The police said an FIR for murder has been registered against the four accused. The incident took place on Thursday morning.

The accused had gone to a farmer's house to recover a tractor for non-payment of outstanding loan amounting to Rs 1.2 lakh. The farmer had taken loan to buy the tractor and had not been making repayments for the past few months.

The recovery agents tried to seize the tractor forcibly and in the process ran over the woman, the farmer's daughter, who tried to stop them from taking the tractor away.

The woman, 25, who was pregnant, suffered injuries and later died in a hospital in Ranchi.

The police said the woman called out for help and seeing the villagers gathering there the accused tried to flee in their four-wheeler, running over the woman.

Following the incident, the finance company issued a statement on Twitter that it would investigate the incident involving third-party collection agencies.

"We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the Hazaribagh incident. A human tragedy has occurred. We will investigate this incident from all aspects and will also undertake an examination of the practice of using third-party collection agencies that has been in existence. We will extend all possible support to the authorities during the investigation into this tragic incident, above all, we stand with the family in this moment of grief," the statement said.
