Eight die in hotel fire in Secunderabad; fire started in e-bike showroom

The e-bikes in a showroom on the ground floor were left on charging in the evening, which could have caused the fire. Some people reported hearing a blast.

HYDERABAD, Sept 13: At least eight people died in a hotel fire in Secunderabad on Monday night. The fire started from an e-bike showroom on the ground floor and engulfed the hotel rooms on the upper floors they were staying.

The deaths occurred mostly out of the asphyxiating smoke that filled the upper floors. Fire tenders doused the flames and rescued the inmates. At least 25 people were believed to have been trapped in the building. Some of them jumped from their windows. Several of the inmates hailed from other States.

There are 23 rooms in the four floors of the hotel. "Some people who were sleeping in the first and second floors came to the corridor through the thick smoke and died due to asphyxiation," Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand told reporters.

Police said an electric short circuit or battery fire might have started the blaze. The e-bikes in the showroom were left on charging in the evening, which could have caused the fire. Some people reported hearing a blast.

"Very unfortunate incident. Fire brigade teams tried their best to rescue people but due to heavy smoke, some people died. Some people were rescued. We are probing how the incident happened," Telangana Home Minister Mohd Mohamood Ali tweeted.

"Saddened by the loss of lives due to a fire in Secunderabad, Telangana. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be paid to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be paid to the injured," the PMO tweeted.
