30 die in mishaps during Ganesh Chaturthi festival

Many innocent lives are lost every year during Ganesh Chaturthi festival because of a lack of basic security management of public events.

While Ganesh Chaturthi is a solemn religious observance as per Hindu scriptures, the ten-day public celebration has been a recent political fabrication without thought to an operational 'SOP'.

MUMBAI. Sept 10: Thirty-one people died in mishaps in various parts of the country, especially in Maharashtra, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival that ended on Friday.

During the period of Chaturthi devotees in procession immerse idols of Lord Ganesh, which were brought home on day one, in water bodies like rivers and ponds, in a ritual called 'Ganpati Visarjan,' usually on the final day.

Over 20 people died, most of them by drowning across Maharashtra in idol immersion-related incidents, it was officially stated. In Raigad district ten people suffered injuries due to electric shock from a generator cable during the procession. In Thane, a woman died when a tree fell a Ganesh festival pandal. The drowning incidents occurred in Ahmednagar, Yavatmal, Wardha and Jalgaon. A road accident killed four people in Nagpur. Two persons died in immersion-related incidents in Pune.

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and the immersion procession in Mumbai went off without a problem, the police said. "#GaneshUtsav2022 in Mumbai conducted & celebrated peacefully, smoothly & enthusiastically. I thank all the Mumbaikars, Members of all the Ganesh Mandals & all the Lord Ganesha's devotees, who followed all instructions & cooperated with us, the MUMBAI POLICE!," the city police's Twitter handle said.

In Haryana, six men died during Ganesh idol immersions in the Mahendragarh and Sonipat districts. “The news of the untimely death of many people due to drowning in the canal during Ganpati immersion in Mahendragarh and Sonipat districts is heart-wrenching. We all stand with the families of the deceased in this difficult time. NDRF team has saved many people from drowning, I pray for their speedy recovery,” tweeted Manohar Lal Khattar.

Three children drowned in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred in Ganga in Kotwali Safipur. Four children died after drowning in the Aami river In Sant Kabir Nagar’s Maghar.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar.

Ganesh Chaturthi, dedicated to Lord Ganesh, is one of the biggest Hindu festivals celebrated in India. The Lord, it is believed, brings wisdom and prosperity to his devotees. Chaturthi marks the birth of the elephant-headed deity. A fast is observed on the first day of the 10-day festival as per Hindu calendar. This year it was August 31 when the idol's 'stapana' (installation) was done.

Ganesh is worshipped at the beginning of any new activity and also for removing any obstacles in life. Son of Shiva and Parvati, he is called Vighneshvara. Ganesh Chaturthi is also called Vinayaka Chaturthi.

While Ganesh Chaturthi is a religious observance as per Hindu scriptures, the ten-day public celebration has been a recent political fabrication. Otherwise all festivals are functionally meant for social entertainment of the masses with a contextual reference sourced to some religious instance or a folklore for credibility.
