UK's King Charles III promises to carry on his mother's legacy

The Sovereign declared tthat His Highness will uphold the constitutional principles and the precious traditions of "our unique history." However, observers fear he tends to go overboard on national issues unlike of his mother who never expressed any views in public or took sides. The Queen's regime was marked by stability, standards, unity, tradition and values.

LONDON, Sept 9: In his first address to the nation as sovereign on Friday evening, King Charles III expressed his profound sorrow at the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, promising to carry on her legacy. In a televised address, he said, “Our values have remained and must remain constant.”

He praised the Queen's warmth, humour and ability to see the best in people.

"In the course of the last seventy years we have seen our society become one of many cultures and many faiths. The institutions of the State have changed in turn. But...Our values have remained, and must remain, constant.

"I have been brought up to cherish a sense of duty to others, and to hold in the greatest respect the precious traditions, freedoms and responsibilities of our unique history and our system of parliamentary government.

"Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived," King Charles III said, as he renewed his "darling Mama's" promise of lifelong service, Accession Council

"...I, too, now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation," the new monarch said, echoing the spirit of what his mother had said on her 21st birthday: "My whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service". The princess was just 25 when she became Queen in 1952.

He became the King immediately after the Queen's death automatically but his new role will be officially proclaimed on Saturday at 10 am London time in a ceremony at St. James’s Palace, a royal residence near Buckingham Palace.

Charles arrived in Buckingham Palace on Friday morning from Scotland.

MPs paid tribute to the late monarch in the House of Commons in the afternoon Friday.

The King held his first audience with Liz Truss the Prime Minister, on Friday before he addressed the nation on television in the evening.

On Saturday morning, Charles was to be formally proclaimed as King at an Accession Council meeting. The coronation will take several months.
