Cyrus Mistry killed in road accident near Mumbai

The former Tata Sons chairman was travelling in a Mercedes car at high speed from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when it hit a divider of a constricted lane approaching a bridge in Palghar district near Mumbai at 3:15 pm on Sunday. The highway was not meant for Mercedes?

MUMBAI, Sept 4: Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry, 54, died in a road accident on Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway on Sunday afternoon. He was travelling in a Mercedes car from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when it hit a divider in Palghar district near Mumbai at 3:15 pm. The mishap occurred upon approaching a bridge over the Surya river at which point the lanes with concrete dividers converge into a slight constriction which is not visible in high speed, it is said. Highways are supposed to be conceived and built for super speeds in every respect.

Jahangir Pandole, Director at KPMG Global Strategy Group, travelling in the car was also killed. Two others - Anayta Pandole, a Mumbai gyanaecologist, who was behind the wheel, and Darius Pandole, her husband and Jahangir's brother - have been taken to hospital in serious condition. Jahangir and Mistry were in the back seat. They were not wearing seat belts, eyewitnesses quoted the first responders. There were in all four persons in the car.

The Maharashtra Government has ordered an inquiry.

Mistry became Chairman of Tata Sons in December 2012. In October 2016 he was removed after a long-drawn legal battle. Thereafter N Chandrasekaran became the Chairman.

Son of Pallonji Mistry, owner of Shapoorji Pallonji Group and the biggest stakeholder in the Tata group, had studied civil engineering at London’s Imperial College. Mistry's family is currently in London, according to a report.

Condolences, tributes

People from all walks of life mourned Mistry's death and paid glowing tributes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the death of the billionaire as a "big loss" for the business world.

Chandrasekaran, Tata Sons chairman, said in a statement, “I am deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely demise of Mr Cyrus Mistry. He had a passion for life and it is really tragic that he passed away at such a young age. My deepest condolences and prayers for his family in these difficult times."

Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra took to Twitter and said: "The news was hard to digest. I got to know Cyrus well during his all-too-brief tenure as the head of the House of Tata. I was convinced he was destined for greatness. If life had other plans for him, so be it, but life itself should not have been snatched away from him. Om Shanti "
