Chaos at Delhi IGI airport as strike-hit Lufthansa cancels flights

Strikes and staff shortages continue to cripple airports and airlines in Europe even as there is a boom in air travel after the two-year slump due to the covid pandemic. This time it's Lufthansa flight crew going on strike affecting its global operations. At Delhi's IGI airport over 700 passengers were stranded as two flights to Frankfurt and Munich were cancelled on Friday. A total of 130,000 passengers were stranded at international airports.

NEW DELHI, Sept 3: Over 700 Lufthansa passengers were stranded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday as the German airliner cancelled 800 flights the world over following a one-day strike by the pilots' union and flight crew demanding higher wages. A total of 130,000 passengers were stranded at international airports.

Two of the flights cancelled in Delhi during the day were to Frankfurt and Munich. The flight to Munich was scheduled at 1.10 am and to Frankfurt at 2.50 am on Friday.

At the New Delhi airport's T3 Terminal it was utter chaos in the morning as the passengers began shouting slogans. It was not known why the airline allowed bookings or did not make alternative arrangements as the agitation was going on for several months. A crowd of relatives and friends who had come to see off the passengers also joined the protest demanding refunds or alternative arrangements, leading to a traffic jam.

Frankfurt and Munich airports were the worst affected.

The strike was announced by the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) on Thursday. Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, has over 5,000 pilots. The strike call had a massive impact on flight operations on Friday.

The pilots' union which called the strike represents 9,000 flight crew. The union had been demanding a 5,5 % pay hike and a more liberal holiday sytem. They were also demanding an automatic adjustment for future inflation.

The management had offered a hike of 900 euros ($896) in basic pay per month. It said the running cost would go up by 40% if the union demand is conceded which it won't be able to bear. It said the cost would amount to an additional 900 million euros.

"An estimated 1,30,000 passengers will be affected, in view of the upcoming weekend, the end of the holidays in some parts of Europe. Lufthansa is working with joint forces to return its flight operations to a normal status as quickly as possible. Nevertheless, the effects of the strike may still lead to individual flight cancellations or delays this Saturday and Sunday," Lufthansa had had said in a statement on Thursday. Talks held with the union the previous day had failed.

After a two-year slump due to the covid pandemic when the air travel opened up, there was widespread shortage of staff especially in European airports. Demand for pay rise and strikes became a common occurrence at these airports, especially the UK. Inflation and mounting cost of living added fuel to the fire.

Staff shortages and strikes have led to thousands of flights cancellation across Europe recently.
