Two climbers from Arunachal missing near China border
Tapi Mra and Niku Dao, who had gone on a mountaineering expedition to Khyarw Satam in Mount Kyarisatam in Arunachal Pradesh, are missing since August 17. The peak is close to China border. Two porters, who had accompanied them up to the base camp, had returmed on August 29 to inform that they had lost communication with the climbers on August 17 after they left Camp II and possibly they were missing. A helicopter search operation was then launched by the army but called off because of bad weather. On Thursday, a ground search team was despatched to look for them.

NEW DELHI, Sept 1: Two mountaineers are missing in Arunachal Pradesh near China border since August 17. Tapi Mra and Niku Dao, his associate, had gone on an expedition in East Kameng to assault Arunachal Pradesh's highest peak, Khyarw Satam, situated at an altitude of 6,900 metres in Mount Kyarisatam in the Eastern Himalayas. The base camp is at 5,000 metres and it takes seven days trekking.

As four military helicopters engaged in a search operation had returned because of bad weather, the rescue operation is being carried out by a ground team comprising of over a hundred armymen, mountaineers and others. It was to start for the mountain on Thursday. It takes 7-8 days trek to reach the base camp.

Two porters, who had accompanied them up to the base camp, had returmed to Seppa, the headquarters of East Kameng district, on August 29, and informed the administration that they had lost communication with the climbers and possibly they were missing. Both Mra and Dao started from Camp II on August 17 and thereafter lost communication. The helicopter search operation was then launched but called off because of bad weather.

Two advanced light helicopters (ALHs) and two Cheetah helicopters have been kept on standby and they will start rescue operation when the weather clears up.

On May 31, 2009, Tapi Mra, 37, became the first Arunachal mountaineer to climb Everest.
