Ten Kanwariyas electrocuted in DJ van in Cooch Behar
COOCH BEHAR, August 1: Ten Kanwariyas were electrocuted in Cooch Behar in Bengal
on Sunday night. The yatris, hailing from Sitalkuchi, were travelling to Jalpesh
in a van when the accident took place.
The driver fled the place. Twenty seven people have been hospitalised. It is
suspected that the accident took place because of the DJ system placed in the
back of the van. The passengers, it is believed, came into direct contact with
live wires from the generator. The victims' kin have been informed of the accident.
The vehicle has been seized.
The injured were brought to Changrabandha public health centre from where 16
of 27 passengers were referred to Jalpaiguri hospital.
The incident took place at Dharla Bridge under Mekhliganj Police Station area
in Bengal.
"At around midnight, an incident took place at Dharla Bridge under Mekhliganj
Police Station, where a pick-up van carrying Kanwariyas on its way to Jalpesh
got electrocuted. As per the preliminary inquiry, it appears that the incident
took place due to wiring of the generator of the DJ system which was fitted
in the back of the vehicle," Mathabhanga Additional Superintendent of Police
Amit Varma told India Today.
