Indigo skids on Jorhat runway: Narrow escape for 98 air passengers

The flight from Jorhat in Assam to Kolkata was later cancelled as the technical problem could not be fixed. About 150 air mishaps have taken place in the last three months.

JORHAT, July 29: Ninety eight passengers had a narrow escape when an Indigo flight skidded on Jorhat runway and veered to the grass field on one side, the wheel getting stuck in the mud, while taking off on Thursday.

The flight from Jorhat in Assam to Kolkata was later cancelled as the glitch in the aircraft could not be fixed. The flight was scheduled to depart at 2.20 pm.

While taxiing for take-off on the runway, the aircraft's wheels veered off the tarmac and were stuck in the soft mud in a field beside the runway, the airlines said.

"IndiGo flight 6E-757 operating from Jorhat to Kolkata returned back to the bay. While taxiing out, the pilot was advised that one of the main wheels had partially run over the grass adjacent to the taxiway," it said.

"The aircraft was taken back to the bay at Jorhat for inspection. During the initial inspection no abnormalities were observed. As a matter of caution the maintenance team initiated a thorough inspection. The flight was cancelled," the IndiGo statement said.

"There was some technical issue with the aircraft. There were 98 passengers on board. All passengers are deboarded and are safe. They waited in the terminal building and the flight was cancelled at around 8:15 pm," an airport official told PTI.

The Indian Air Force personnel came to the rescue of the passengers to deboard. The IAF maintains the airport.

About 150 air mishaps have taken place in the last three months, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said in Parliament. He said in the Lok Sabha in a written reply that a total of 478 technical snag-related occurrences were reported in planes between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022.
