A 31-year-old is first monkeypox case in Delhi

The patient was admitted to a hospital with symptoms like skin rash and fever three days ago. He has no foreign travel history. Three other cases were reported from Kerala.

NEW DELHI, July 24: Monkeypox comes to Delhi! With Delhi reporting its first monkeypox case, the total number of cases in India has risen to four, the other three reported from Kerala. The patient in west Delhi was admitted to a hospital with the viral symptoms like skin rash and fever three days ago and the sample was tested positive at the virology institute in Pune.

The 31-year old man is reported to have attended a party in Manali in Himachal Pradesh recently but has no foreign travel history. He is recovering.

Confirming the case, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that there's no need to panic. "The first case of monkeypox was detected in Delhi. The patient is stable and recovering. There's no need to panic. The situation is under control. We have made a separate isolation ward at LNJP. Our best team is on the case to prevent the spread and protect Delhiites," he tweeted.

"The person was admitted two days ago. He had fever and skin rash.We kept him under observation. Later his samples were sent to Pune and today we received the report in which he was found positive for Monkeypox. He's being treated as per SoP," said Suresh Kumar, Director, LNJP Hospital.

There are 16 laboratories for testing monkeypox.

The first three cases in India were reported from Kerala. In the first case, a 35-year-old man who came from the UAE and got admitted in the Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital in Kerala was confirmed positive for monkeypox on July 14. The man had come into close contact with an infected person while in the UAE. The Centre had sent a team of experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to the State to study the case.

There is no specific treatment so far. Symptoms are like in smallpox: Fever, skin rashes, vomiting, headache, itching etc. Complications can occur like pneumonia, sepsis, encephalitis and corneal involvement. The transmission occurs from infected animals to humans via direct or indirect contact and then among humans through physical contact or fomites. The virus belongs to the family of smallpox and cowpox called Poxviridae.

Earlier, India had put the airports on alert as monkeypox began spreading in Europe, US and other countries. Hundreds of cases have been reported from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland and Israel.

So far 16,000 monkeypox cases have been reported from 75 countries across the world but deaths are very few.
