Kallakurichi principal, two teachers held; SC okays HC order for fresh autopsy

The girl's mother seeks answers from the residential school why there was not a drop of blood on the ground where she is reported to have fallen and how come there were injury marks all over her body. The parents have refused to receive their daughter's body from the hospital mortuary, alleging that the post-mortem examination was fixed.

CHENNAI, July 19: After widespread violence and arson on Sunday over the death of a student in a school in Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu, the police arrested the principal, two teachers and three school officials in connection with the tragic incident.

The case was transferred to the CB-CID on Monday after the High Court's intervention on a petition by the girl's father. The court also ordered a fresh autopsy by a team of three doctors the court will nominate.

As the father's plea to allow a doctor of his choice on the medical panel was rejected by the HC, he approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday but the apex court also turned down his appeal.

Prohibitory orders are in force in the area till July 31 and 2,500 policemen have been deployed in the premises.

The private schools association in the State had declared closure on Monday as a mark of protest against the violence in Kallakurichi but only 987 schools remained shut.

Three hundred people have been arrested for vandalising the school and torching 15 school buses and furniture and police vehicle on Sunday. Several people, including 50 policemen, were injured in the violence and arson by angry mobs.

The 17-year old Class 12 girl student of Sakthi Matriculation School in Kaniyamoor in Chinnasalem in Kallakurichi district was found dead on the hostel premises on July 13. The girl is suspected to have jumped to death from the top floor of the hostel. She was residing in a room on the third floor. A suicide note was found in her room in which she named two teachers who "tortured" her.

Her parents have since been staging protests in their native district of Cuddalore and in Kallakurichi where the private residential school is situated, demanding an investigation. They allege their daughter was tortured and killed. They allege there was no blood on the spot where the watchman found the body and that there were injury marks all over the body.

The parents have reportedly refused to receive the body from the mortuary of the Kallakurichi Medical College Hospital after the autopsy.

Earlier reports had said the arrested teachers tortured the student for poor performance in studies.

Where is Kallakurichi: Kallakurichi is 260 km from Chennai and near Villupuram in northern Tamil Nadu.
