Monsoon batters Gujarat, Telangana, M'rashtra

Gujarat is taking the brunt of the monsoon fury; hundreds of roads are under water and the rivers are overflowing. In Nashik, in Maharashtra, several temples were submerged due to rise in the water level of Godavari river. A flood alert was issued downstream in Bhadrachalam in Telangana, which is one of the worst affected. Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam has improved. In Delhi, the weatherman felt ditched as it poured heavily in the afternoon, bringing relief. It has been very close for several days running.

NEW DELHI, July 11: While the death toll in the monsoon rains has climbed to 76 in Maharashtra where it is still pouring, Telangana has closed schools for three days from Monday and all roads in Ahmedabad are under water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy showers will continue in several parts of the country like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Goa and Kerala for the next three to four days.

South and central Gujarat received very heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours. Low-lying areas were flooded. Eight villages in Dabhoi taluka of Vadodara were totally inundated. Several hundred roads were closed in the State. Over 3,000 people were evacuated. Heavy rains washed away a bridge in Panchol in Tapi district on Sunday. Valsad, Navsari and Tapi districts were worst affected. The NDRF is carrying out relief and rescue works as Auranga river overflowed. All schools and colleges were shut in Ahmedabad.

Telangana declared a three-day holiday for academic institutions from Monday. Train services were also suspended. The South-Central Railway cancelled 34 trains for three days. A flood alert was issued in Bhadrachalam as Godavari river crossed the danger mark.

In Karnataka, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts have been badly affected and the relief operations are continuing. The coastal districts declared holiday for schools and anganwadis on Monday.

In Nashik, several temples were submerged due to rise in the water level of Godavari river. It crossed the 48 feet danger mark. A landslide occurred on the road leading to Bhimashankar jyotirlinga temple in Pune district on Monday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Deendra Fadnavis were leaving for Gadchiroli to assess the flood situation. Seventy six people have lost their lives since the onset of the monsoon in the State.

Mumbai received moderate rains on Monday.

Three labourers were killed in lightning during heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Sunday.

An orange alert was issued for the northern Kerala districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, and a yellow alert for all the remaining districts except for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

Dehradun in Uttarakhand received heavy rainfall on Monday.

The flood situation in Assam has improved with the rivers flowing below the danger mark.

It plays truant in Delhi

National Capital Delhi also received good rains on Monday afternoon after a dry and sultry spell. It has been very close for several days running. There was waterlogging and traffic dislocations in places like Najafgarh but the citizens heaved a sigh of relief. Before the rains, in the morning the humidity was 75%. The weatherman felt ditched as he had forecast nil rain on Monday. It needs no mention that the air quality shot up by several notches. The monsoon had broken over Delhi on June 30 keeping the schedule but had disappeared in between.
