LUCKNOW, July 10: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Lulu Mall in Lucknow on Sunday. The mall, located on the Amar Shaheed Path, Golf City, will be opened for the public on Monday.

The Chief Minister visited some of the sections like LuLu Hypermarket and the family entertainment zone Funtura along with Lulu Group chairman Yusuff Ali MA.

The mall houses 15 restaurants and a food court with 25 brand outlets that have a capacity of seating 1600 patrons. It also has a wedding shopping arena. The parking facility can handle 3,000 vehicles.

The mall is spread across 2.2 million square feet. The next mega projects will be in Varanasi and Prayagraj.

The Lulu Group has four other malls in the country at Kochi, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur.

The future of malls

The shopping mall in Kochi was built on an investment of Rs 1,600 crore It has a retail space of 2.2 million sq ft in 17 acres. The mall designed by WS Atkins, UK based consultants, has a parking capacity for 3000 cars. It has escalators, elevators, travelators and walkways for shoppers to move from section to other. Located at Edapally, Kochi, the mall features the widest choice of world-class brands at the fairest prices, it is claimed. A special area has been allocated to promote Kerala products and handicrafts. The mall was expected to generate 8000 direct jobs and more than 20,000 indirect job opportunities. The mall opened on March 10, 2013.

The Lulu Mall Thiruvananthapuram was opened on December 17, 2021. It has a built-up space of 2 million sq ft. with 300 national and international brands.

There are 200 LuLu Hypermarkets in the GCC countries, five in India, one in Malaysia and four in Indonesia.

However, with the craze and convenience of online retail, fewer people are visiting malls these days. The two years of lockdown due to covid pandemic only made them dispensable. As the footfalls decline, the sustainability of such massive complexes is also becoming difficult for the proprietors. According to Credit Suisse, most malls are going bankrupt in the US.
